The 2015 « European refugee crisis » highlighted the necessity for cross-disciplinary thinking on migratory issues and their challenges.
The subject matter is extensive. International migration lies at the crossroads of disciplines such as geography, history, demography, economics, law, political sciences, sociology, anthropology, ethics, social epidemiology and infectiology.
At present, no other research institution addresses all of these dimensions. Thus, the CI Migration project is to facilitate research and learning across a range of disciplines
Comprehensive overview
Following the four general affiliation campaigns in March 2018, April 2018, April 2019 and April 2021, as well as the affiliation campaigns for international researchers and PhD students in 2020. The CI Migration has selected 638 researchers and 176 PhD students.
As to the CI Migration goals, two-thirds of the fellows are from the eight institutions of the founding consortium the remaining third is made up of fellows from further Parisian, provincial and foreign universities along with other organisations.

The recruitment within the departments reflects the considerable commitment to the disciplinary and thematic diversity of its researchers. For instance, the HEALTH department comprises economists, demographers, historians, anthropologists, public health specialists, epidemiologists, clinicians, sociologists and geographers.
Committed to reinforcing the relationship between science and society with regard to migration, the CI Migration provides tools to critically and constructively understand contemporary issues through its journal De facto, the webinar Parlons Migrations, a partnership with the association Désinfox-Migrations, etc.
The Institute intends to review the magnitude of migration phenomena, critically assess existing data, produce new data, make temporal and spatial comparisons, clarify arguments, and articulate the observed phenomena in a descriptive, explanatory and normative way.
Through a dedicated budget, the CI Migration intends to get together with stakeholders operating on regional and local levels, such as elected officials, associations, academics, administrations, agencies and companies.
In addition to the Scientific Board, there is a Territories and Associations Commission that is an integral part of the reflection on the choice of research to be carried out and that is directly in contact with local actors.

The CI Migration proposes a master’s degree in MIGRATIONS, jointly awarded by the EHESS and the University of Paris 1‑Panthéon Sorbonne. Within a rapidly growing field of research, this innovative programme, supported by all of the project’s partners, complements other master’s programmes on migration. Its assets are its interdisciplinarity and field methodology nature. Its objective is to train researchers and professionals specialised in migration, some of whom may continue their training in specialised Doctoral Schools.
